Days passed, and Emily found herself constantly looking over her shoulder, expecting Rachel to appear at any moment. But the blonde girl seemed to have vanished into thin air.
Emily's encounters with Liam were limited to their shared classes, and even then, the tension between them was palpable. They barely spoke, and when they did, the conversation was stilted and awkward.
It was as if they were two opposing forces, locked in a silent struggle for dominance.
One day, as Emily was walking across campus, she saw Liam sitting on a bench, staring at his phone. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should approach him.
But something about his expression drew her in. He looked... troubled.
Emily sat down beside him, her eyes fixed on his profile. "Hey," she said softly.
Liam looked up, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in Emily's presence. "Hey."
They sat in silence for a moment, the only sound the distant chatter of students.
Then Liam spoke up, his voice low. "I'm sorry about Rachel."
Emily turned to him, her eyes searching his. "What do you mean?"
Liam shrugged. "I mean, I'm sorry she's been bothering you. She can be... intense."
Emily raised an eyebrow. "Intense?" That was one way to put it.
Liam smiled wryly. "Yeah. Look, I know we don't exactly get along, but I don't want you to have to deal with Rachel's drama."
Emily felt a spark of surprise. Was Liam actually being... nice?
"Thanks," she said finally, her voice a little softer.
Liam nodded, his eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the tension between them crackling with energy.
Then Liam looked away, his expression shuttered. "No problem."
The silence that followed was awkward, but Emily didn't pull away. She just sat there, feeling the weight of Liam's gaze, even though he wasn't looking at her.
It was a strange, uneasy truce, but Emily felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to get along.
