An Unwelcome Encounter

Chapter 2: An Unwelcome Encounter

The next day, Emily walked into the college library, determined to get a head start on her project. She scanned the room, her eyes landing on a quiet table in the corner.

As she settled in, Emily noticed a familiar figure walking towards her. Liam.

Her heart sank. What was he doing here?

Liam dropped into the chair across from Emily, a stack of books in his hands. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

Emily raised an eyebrow. "Actually, I do."

Liam chuckled. "Tough luck. I'm stuck with you, remember?"

Emily glared at him, but Liam just smiled and began to unpack his books.

As they worked, the tension between them was palpable. Emily tried to focus on her notes, but she couldn't help sneaking glances at Liam.

What was it about him that got under her skin?

As the hours passed, Emily found herself growing more and more uncomfortable. She couldn't concentrate on her work, not with Liam sitting across from her, his eyes occasionally flicking up to meet hers.

She tried to focus on her notes, but her mind kept wandering back to their earlier encounter. Why did he have to be so arrogant? And why did she have to be so attracted to him?

As the library started to close, Emily packed up her things and stood up, her eyes meeting Liam's across the table.

"I'll see you in class tomorrow," he said, his voice low and smooth.

Emily nodded curtly and turned to leave, her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn't wait to get out of there and away from Liam's unsettling presence.

As she walked out of the library, Emily felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was glad to be free of Liam's company, at least for a little while.

But as she walked across campus, Emily couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced over her shoulder, but there was no one there.

Or so she thought.

Emily quickened her pace, her heart beating slightly faster. She told herself she was being paranoid, that Liam was probably still in the library, packing up his things.

But the feeling persisted, and Emily found herself glancing over her shoulder again and again.

As she turned a corner, Emily caught a glimpse of a figure following her. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized it was Liam.

What was he doing, following her?

Emily's anger flared, and she spun around to confront him. "What do you want, Liam?" she demanded.

Liam held up his hands, a innocent expression on his face. "Hey, I was just walking in the same direction. No need to get paranoid."

Emily narrowed her eyes. "Save it, Liam. I know you were following me."

Liam chuckled. "You're not as oblivious as you seem, Emily."

Emily's eyes flashed with anger. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Liam's smile grew wider. "Just that you're more aware of me than you let on."

Emily's face burned with embarrassment. How did he know?

Emily's eyes locked onto Liam's, a silent challenge passing between them. She refused to back down, to admit that he was right.

But as they stood there, the air thickening with tension, Emily felt a flutter in her chest. It was a feeling she couldn't quite explain, a mix of annoyance and... something else.

Liam's eyes seemed to bore into hers, as if he could see right through her. Emily felt a shiver run down her spine, and she quickly looked away, breaking the spell.

"I'm going home," she said, her voice firm.

Liam nodded, his smile still playing on his lips. "I'll walk with you."

Emily hesitated, unsure if she wanted his company. But Liam was already falling into step beside her, his long strides matching hers.

As they walked, the silence between them grew thicker, until it was almost palpable. Emily felt like she was walking on eggshells, waiting for Liam to make his next move.

But for now, he just walked beside her, his presence a constant reminder that she wasn't alone.

And as they disappeared into the evening shadows, Emily couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a very complicated relationship.
